What makes for a sustainable city? A seminar on an integrated approach for developing sustainable cities, Smart Eco Systems, will debate issues relating to this topic next month.
The event to be organised in Chennai by the Confederation of Indian Industry – Tamil Nadu State council on February 24 will look at means for a balanced regional development. Economic growth drives industrialisation and urbanisation which brings into question the issue of sustainability of the urban environment.
Sustainable cities balance economic needs, environment, security and quality of life through planning, connectivity, infrastructure and effective governance.
A press note from CII points to the huge investments in urban infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. As prices soar in cities and basic infrastructure is stretched to the limits, building cities away from the core node is an option for developing planned urban centres. Such centres, industrial hubs and eco friendly cities can drive the growth of business and industry.
Smart Eco System will focus on transition from rural to urban, opportunities and challenges in new cities, guidelines for sustainability, model cities, inclusive urban growth and localised governance.
